So, I officially started P90X3 today! If you’ve ever done P90X or P90X2, you know the it is Tony Horton’s style to push you to the limits! Ever since I finished Insanity in August, I haven’t done this style of extreme workout! In between Insanity and X3, I used Chalean Extreme to build lean muscle but there’s a focus on slow, heavy lifting. P90X3 is definitely not SLOW! It is not for the faint of heart at all!
Can a beginner do P90X3? Maybe! Probably! Were you ever an athlete? Have you ever had a workout routine? How motivated are you to stick to it? If you are or were an athlete, know how to workout, OR are self-motivated to fail you’re way through it, you can do it. It is a program that is going to push you. Tony doesn’t caudle. He tells you what needs to get done and inspires you by providing living, breathing examples of what is possible when you put your mind to something. He also provides examples of how to modify moves. Simply put, he delivers results!
I did Total Synergistics, the first workout of the “Classic” schedule this morning at 5:45. I had my preworkout drink (E&E) at 5:30 and was ready to hit it hard! I failed a lot with certain moves. I’m pretty sure I fell over 6 times in the 2 minute segment where you transition between two intermediate yoga moves, half moon and warrior three. It was almost like a comedy show for my dog and cat that sat complacently staring at me like I had more heads than Medusa. On a SIDENOTE, how many of you wonder what your pets are thinking when they see you do ridiculous things like a crazy workout? I am convinced mine think human-like thoughts. Our animals see my put on my tennis shoes and grab a seat like they know they’re in for a show and a laugh.
ANYWAY, another thing I noticed this morning was that there are a fair amount of transitions between being bent over and standing up. The first time I transitioned I got very dizzy. I think this was a combination of my own carelessness in moving too quickly along with it being early as hell AND -30 degrees outside. BUT! That doesn’t mean everyone will have the same head rush. I just tell you this as an example. Learning the program and a learning your body’s response is key to any program. I now know what I need to modify in making those transitions: move slower!!!
I loved the total body workout I got. I used a combination of body weight, a 3 and 8 pound dumbbell, and a resistance band. I could’ve easy skipped the dumbbells and used the band only OR grabbed a gallon of milk for that sake, but I like variety! There was a few exercises done from plank positions (top of a push up), lots standing, and lots somewhere in between. The “Crawly Plyo Pushup” (sounds scary, right) is the move I am bound and determined to conquer. You get into a pushup position, bring one knee up to the abdomen and that same arm close to the knee and then “JUMP” and switch to the opposite side. It is TOUGH. I can get though about 5 before I have to modify. Again, why am I telling you about how it is hard when I already said you can probably do it? Because I want you to see that you can make your own modifications and still get an EFFECTIVE workout! I simply began stepping my feet and hands into the proper positions one at a time at my own pace so that I could complete the exercise in it’s entirety! You can make ANYTHING work for you as long as you are willing to come up with a way to do so!!!
I could ramble on about my 30 minute workout for a while but I will wrap this one up. My purpose for today’s review is to let you in on my struggles and success and, more importantly, to help you realize that YOU are the driver of the bus. YOU can make ANY workout yours. Just set your mind to it and make it a reality!
